Imagine exchanging vows in a setting that echoes with centuries of history, is one of the most famous universities in the world, and surrounded by the dreamy spires of Oxford. Nestled in the heart of this ancient university town, Balliol College sets the stage for a wedding that blends classic elegance with a touch of modern romance.
Amy and Austin chose to marry at Balliol College in July, and fully embraced every corner of the beautiful buildings. Austin is an alumni of Oxford University, and so was able to marry beautiful Amy in the historic Chapel, before spending the rest of the day in different buildings around the campus.
We were lucky enough to photograph and film their wedding at Balliol College, Oxford, to capture this magical day.
With its stunning architecture and lush gardens, Balliol provides the perfect backdrop for a wedding – especially as it’s exclusive to the alumni of the college (which also include Boris Johnson!). Imagine saying your vows in the breathtaking chapel, where the soft glow of stained glass windows casts a warm and romantic atmosphere. As you walk down the aisle, you can almost feel the history beneath your feet.
Amy, her dad and her bridesmaids made their entrance to the backdrop of Handel’s Zadok the Priest (the music used as the theme for the Champions League) which was spine-tingling in itself.
After the ceremony, the enchanting gardens offer a picturesque spot for post-nuptial bliss. Imagine celebrating with your loved ones amidst blooming flowers and ivy-covered walls – a perfect fusion of nature and architecture that will make your special day truly unforgettable.
Unfortunately, the heavens opened once the ceremony was finished (before the wind decided to blow Amy’s veil all over the shop during the confetti walk!), meaning we had to be inside for the drinks reception – but with the string quartet providing the background music, it didn’t make any difference.
Balliol was founded in 1263, and all the rooms are unique, magical and steeped in history, from the majestic dining hall to the cosy common rooms.
Amy and Austin made the most of having access to almost everywhere; holding their wedding breakfast in the magnificent Great Hall (it was honestly like something out of Harry Potter. Think long tables, oil paintings donning the walls, rich brown panelling; we can only dream of eating here regularly as a student); drinks in the Buttery Bar; photos on the green, and dancing in the Senior Common Room.
Beyond the wedding festivities, Balliol College places you in the heart of one of the world’s most iconic university towns. Your guests can explore the historic streets, visit world-renowned museums, and soak in the intellectual and cultural vibrancy that defines Oxford. The college’s central location makes it easy for everyone to immerse themselves in the Oxford experience.
We were there in July, so the flowers were in full bloom, but it’s gorgeous in any season (especially late spring with the wisteria!).
We had such a great wedding at Balliol, and Amy and Austin were such a lovely couple. Their speeches were fantastic, the venue was absolutely incredible, and we’re so happy with the photos and video!
Balliol College, Oxford, isn’t just a wedding; it’s a journey through time, and a celebration of love in a setting that resonates with centuries of history. If you’re looking for a wedding that seamlessly blends tradition with modern romance, Balliol College offers an idyllic backdrop for the start of your happily ever after.
